Definition: 1. The unsettling awareness of one’s own heartbeat, occurring in moments of quick fear, panic or extreme silence.

Neologism created by John Koenig in 2012 as part of his The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows project.

Dedicated to my father who passed away February 2016, this piece explores human condition focusing on themes of loss, grief and connection. Inspired and structured by the stages of grief, the performers dove deep into the state of being, during and after a harsh emotional event finding pain, love and self destruction.

The process of this was very emotional, tapping into the dancers vulnerable side followed by understanding and studying how the body physically responded to the emotions to create movement phrases. I tend to work very collaboratively with the artists and this was especially important with a piece like this; the dancers brought their own stories of loss as inspiration and support for their movement vocabulary.
